The next day Orient met Andy for a late lunch at J.G. Melon’s. The ex-senator wore a dour expression as he squinted through the sun-streaked windows. After the waitress took their order, he turned to Orient and shook his hand.

“I’m afraid what I’ve got won’t be of much help.”

“You look worried.”

“I am worried, Owen.”

“That bad?”

“You tell me. I phoned the precinct captain downtown, who happens to be an old acquaintance. He swears they checked out your anonymous tip. And they found no body—no evidence of any crime at all—at your friend’s apartment.”

“Is he sure they got the right place?”

“Basement loft, filled with computer equipment? Tenant goes by the nickname of Duke?”

“That’s the one,” Orient admitted reluctantly

“I also called an old school chum in Southampton. Happens to be the mayor there.”

“I know,” Orient said warily. “There was no accident reported at St. Jeremy’s Cemetery.”

“Oh, but there was.”

“Finally we’ve got something. Did they identify the body?”

“Bodies, you mean.” Andy paused as the waitress returned with their drinks, a scotch for him and a ginger ale for Orient. “Bodies?” Orient repeated as she left.

Andy tossed down his drink in one swallow. “Yes. Two security guards at St. Jeremy’s were killed when their van overturned and caught fire. Very little left to identify.”

“But what about Shandy?” Orient blurted out.

Andy shrugged and signaled the waitress for a refill.

“Either way, Shandy is dead. Odds are his body is back where you found it. Your friends seem to be quite thorough.”

Disconcerted by the news, Orient stared across the dimly lit bar, trying to suppress the fear coiling inside his belly. The feeling that he had taken on much more than he could handle burrowed through his thoughts like a tapeworm, consuming what little remained of his courage. The waitress arrived with Andy’s scotch and he had a sudden urge to order one for himself. Instead he sipped his ginger ale and waited for her to leave. Almost everyone lived in fear. The trick was to live with it.

He wondered if St. George feared the inhuman horrors unleashed by his rites. Perhaps he’s afraid of himself, Orient thought ruefully.

“Seriously, Owen,” Andy said firmly, “you might want to reconsider that trip to Jamaica.”

Orient managed a small smile. “Actually, you caught me in the act.”

“Then you will tell Westlake to stuff it?”

“I’ll think it over,” he promised.

But that night, as he watched the smoke from his hand-wrapped cigarette curl around the bedside lamp, Orient knew he had no choice.
